The center was built to efficiently develop a massive volume of high-quality “teacher data”, which is essential for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), in a secure environment. The companies aim to implement annotation services to over 10 companies on a trial-basis by the end of FY2017.

A growing demand for annotation – The age of AI makes human skills all the more important -

Recently, the use of purpose-built AI/ML that enables automated, mass, and high-speed processing continues to replace humans in the intelligence-based work area. Yet, AI/ML are not “born smart”, they can only function as so when people “make them smart”. Human skills are indispensable for AI/ML’s “Learn with a Teacher” process. First of all, people who are well-versed in the specific features and nature of each operation define questions for AI/ML to answer. Next, they attach meaning and definition to each one of thousands or millions of unstructured data to develop a massive volume of high-quality “teacher data”. Only then, they can make AI/ML “learn” the “teacher data”. In other words, AI/ML cannot exist without people “developing the teacher data (=annotation)”. However, it is not easy for businesses to prepare internal resources, operations management framework, and know-how to efficiently develop a massive volume of quality teacher data that is optimized for AI/ML. For some businesses, it takes too much time to prepare the teacher data and for others, it is just impossible to develop the data in the first place. As a result, the development of teacher data has become a huge bottleneck for businesses utilizing AI/ML. Understanding this issue, transcosmos opened an annotation center with 30 workstations inside “MCM Center Yokohama”, one of its contact centers. By offering annotation services to clients, transcosmos helps clients drive their AI/ML projects.

Based on its experience in AI/ML projects, the transcosmos annotation center plans and designs annotation projects to develop optimum teacher data, whilst considering the actual analysis and operations to be conducted after AI/ML completes the learning process. transcosmos will push ahead with developing annotation tools that create a massive volume of teacher data efficiently. At the same time, the company will develop high-quality teacher data in collaboration with “Communication Science Lab”, its AI laboratory which specializes in communication, as well as leveraging its know-how of managing/developing diverse talent accumulated through operating secure contact centers that have achieved accredited certification for ISO/IEC27001.

transcosmos offers extensive annotation services including voice annotation like transcribing voice to text data and making edits to text data transcribed by voice recognition software, phrase structure annotation which develops answers to expected questions like FAQs for chat-bots, and image annotation which puts labels including age and gender to image data.

Trial implementation campaign

Commemorating the opening of the annotation center, transcosmos is offering a trial campaign at a special price for businesses that want to try out the annotation services. transcosmos aims to implement the services to over 10 companies by the end of FY2017.
